The House Democrats just revealed a largely-good sounding plan for a public option in our health insurance. I'm psyched; I love the idea of going to regular doctor's appointments and not worrying about going broke if someday down the line I fall off of (or get diagnosed with) something.
I'm all in. I'm for it. Let's go, already. I make my living from YouTube videos - I don't have insurance. There's only a couple hurdles: abortion and illegal immigration.
If memory serves, President Barack Obama said explicitly 1) no abortion funding and 2) no illegal immigrant coverage. From what I am hearing on these laws, however, those two issues are very ambiguous in the actual bill. Why?
I'm not a Democrat or a Republican - that is a silly fight. Just a means to make it look like someone stands for something while nothing gets done. Unfortunately, to get this through we're stuck relying on a political party (in this case, the Democrats). And it seems as though several Democrats won't vote for this bill if there is no explicit
verbage on the two topics I've mentioned.
Why? Because these are topics that hold political clout. These are things that people can get into arguments, fistfights and maybe even war over (given the right conditions), and therefore EASILY divide politicians who care more about how they can get the most votes rather than what is right.
Public health insurance should not be political. That should be something that is demanded in a society that actual work is required to keep everything going. Some might not think it's the government's responsibility, but if that isn't the case why is law enforcement, putting out fires, or keeping our roads in good condition? Health is infrastructure.
Instead of making this political by being ambiguous on these issues, why can't those turds just stop the in-fighting and flat-out say "we're not going to do that stuff?"
