I'm not the biggest comedy act in the country, state or on YouTube. I'm not even one of the biggest. That doesn't bother me, either. I'm not here to be the biggest. If that were the goal, my actions would be very different.
That's why I'm going to start Operation Make Shit to Sell.
The difference between an artist and an entertainer is that an artist doesn't care if other people get their work. To a degree, I'm an artist. I make what I find funny and I don't make stuff that I don't find funny. At least at the time. I look back on some things and don't find them hilarious. But when I made them I did... No tangents, though.
I'm an entertainer, though, because I want this stuff to be my livelihood. It's happening gradually. What I have essentially had to do in order to make what I want and have people that get it is just continually make more. And pimp it.
In addition to being an artist and an entertainer, I'm a businessman. I spend a great deal of my time researching how to make money off this. The difficult part is to balance all this stuff so one area doesn't bleed into the other unless nothing suffers from it.
That's why you don't see a hell of a lot of sponsored stuff. Besides a general lack if interest, anyway. I honestly have had a couple offers though, none I would have been interested in had I not been offered money to be interested in, and that was ultimately why I have never taken them.
I do like trying my hand at videos for poptent.net, though.
Which leads me to Operation Make Shit to Sell. I've put a great deal o time into figuring out if I was actually going to start selling exclusive content. DVDs, music albums, etc. Stuff you won't be able to get on YouTube.
So that's what is happening. First, a DVD. It will be the second solo DVD I've put out and I suspect it will get pirated, but the reason I'm doing it is because people have expressed actual interest in it. Also, it's a means of being able to support the various projects I'm always working to make possible. The t-shirt shop on petercoffin.com is the same thing. Same with the musical projects, which I'm proud to add a fake metal band that Tyler and I have started. It's called HOGdemon.
There will be a website for HD, tshirts, and albums. Real stuff.
So if you're into what I'm doing here and want to see it get bigger and better, I have to ask that you purchase the upcoming DVD when that comes out. I have a donate button on the website, but honestly I'd prefer to give you something inexchange for your money. I don't like begging for cash, but I feel just fine putting everything I have into a product you can puchase if you so choose.
So I'll keep everyone in the loop. My pop record just needs final vocals recorded (most are in demo stage now) and some final mixing touches now. Amazing, eb? Started that in 2004. It's taken so long because I kind of had to learn about myself musically. I had to create a "sound" for myself. I've never had my own identity musically. I was always part of a band that I really didn't do much but play other people's music in. My music from 2002 & 2003 isn't really music. It's excuses to make jokes.
So when that drops later in the year, I'll again ask people to buy it. And I will again with the HOGdemon album, which I am not certain with a release timetable yet. We have one song without vocals written yet. So I have no idea where that is going as of now. Just that our intention is to make it play off like we're a real band and take it way too seriously.
Then I will start work on a second album, and probably some more film-ish type stuff. I want to be making some movies. That's where it's all going to head.
YouTube videos are always going to be part of the plan. I figure them to be my bread and butter. I see the ideal YT video as my way of doing anti-storytelling.
I want to do storytelling too, though. Which is more expensive and more time-consuming because people have to believe it.
That is why Operation Make Shit to Sell is going to become so important, because I'm a moron idealist.
